As a software developer, you don’t want to have to work through an endless backlog of technical debt. It can have a huge impact on productivity which ultimately effects team morale.

Our startup client is building an automated tool that simplifies code migrations and dependency upgrades. And we are helping to build out their engineering team to drive the product roadmap and reach key project milestones.

As the lead design engineer your role will be instrumental in collaborating closely with the founder and fellow engineers to envision interfaces that shape the landscape of future programming. Your efforts will address intriguing inquiries like:

• In a landscape where a significant portion of code is machine-generated, how should novel developer interfaces be crafted?
• What is the optimal approach to acquaint developers with a fresh programming paradigm?
• How can the next generation of developers be effectively educated in a world driven by machine learning?
• What methods can be employed to simplify the representation of program graphs, fostering swift comprehension?
• In an era of industrial-scale software production, which aspects of the developer experience should retain a personalized touch?

Your responsibilities will encompass constructing interactive prototypes, which involve originating novel concepts and translating them into executable code. Yes, we acknowledge this is a unique endeavor—given the nature of this developer-oriented product, we acknowledge that developers possess the finest instincts for shaping its design.

The role:

• Design new interfaces for analyzing source code and managing the software development lifecycle.
• Contribute to, maintain, and ultimately use the Figma/React component library to streamline new interfaces.
• Prototype new UI interactions and write CSS/JS to turn your ideas into code.

Qualifications

• Experience designing creative application interfaces demonstrated in a strong portfolio.
• You have demonstrated experience writing CSS and JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Execution-driven mindset: you love shipping.
• Interest in programming languages (ex. compilers) or machine learning is a plus, but not required. You’ll learn more on the job!
• Comfortable working in low-structure environments and navigating unknown unknowns.
